14 Best Spring Destinations in the U.S. (Wildflowers, Waterfalls, and Warm Beaches)

Spring is one of the best times to travel in the U.S. because the weather is mild, it’s not quite peak tourist season for most places, and prices are often lower than in summer. Spring travel in the U.S. looks different depending on where you go: in some places it means cherry blossoms and wildflowers, while in others it means festivals or less crowded beaches.

I’ve traveled all over the country in spring with my dog, Elgie, as a digital nomad, and we’ve lived through mild desert weather, seen beautiful wildflowers, and experienced cities that are at their best in spring (looking at you, New Orleans).

If you’re planning a spring trip, these are some of the best places in the U.S. to visit, including national parks at peak waterfall season, beach destinations, and cities that really shine this time of year.

Best for Blooms

Is there anything better in the spring than gorgeous blooms? Here are a few top destinations for flowers.

Texas Hill Country

Spring is wildflower season in the Texas Hill Country, when fields of bluebonnets and other blooms cover the countryside. Scenic drives around Fredericksburg are especially beautiful this time of year.

Washington, DC

I’ll be completely honest–D.C. normally does not interest me in the least bit. However, the cherry blossom season is absolutely gorgeous. Peak bloom usually happens in late March or early April. In 2026, Cherry Blossom Festival is March 20 – April 12.

A woman wearing sunglasses and casual clothes stands on a cobblestone street holding a leash attached to a small black and white dog sitting beside her. Trees and buildings line the street in the background.

Charleston, SC

Charleston is charming pretty much any time of year, but it’s especially gorgeous in spring when azaleas and other flowers bloom throughout the historic district.

Best months: March – April for azaleas

Best Spring Desert Destinations Before the Heat

Spring is a great time to check off your desert destinations before the summer heat sets in. Here are some ideas:

A large rock formation resembling a human skull, with deep eye sockets and a nose cavity, sits under a clear blue sky in a desert landscape.
A tall Joshua tree stands in front of a wooden fence at sunset, with desert plants and rocky hills visible in the background under a soft, pastel sky.

Joshua Tree National Park

See the cool rock formations and Seuss-like Joshua Trees at this unique national park. Fun fact: Joshua Trees grow almost exclusively here. Though daytime exploring is fun, don’t miss it at night! The night sky is so dark that you can see the Milky Way and constellations. I stayed in a vintage Airstream nearby, and I highly recommend the experience.

Best Months: March – April

A brick walkway lined with adobe buildings and leafless trees is decorated with colorful papel picado banners hanging overhead under a partly cloudy sky.

Albuquerque, NM

Are you a Breaking Bad fan? You’ll recognize plenty of filming locations and can take a tour if you like. But there’s more to see than that– Albuquerque‘s Old Town is charming, and spring is a wonderful time to ride in a hot air balloon.

A woman in a blue hoodie and sunglasses stands on a rocky overlook holding a black and white dog on a leash, with the vast Grand Canyon landscape in the background under a clear blue sky.

Grand Canyon National Park

Elgie and I enjoyed hiking part of the Rim Trail. Sadly, we only had a day to spend here, but the weather was perfect.

Best National Parks Before Summer Crowds

Summer is peak traveling season for national parks. Check these off your bucket list before everyone else does.

A tall waterfall cascades down a steep, rocky cliff surrounded by lush green trees and mist at the base. Large boulders are scattered around the waterfall’s plunge pool.

Yosemite

I feel like no time is a bad time to visit Yosemite–there’s always some unique wonder going on. But in the spring, it’s premium waterfall season. The snowmelt means the waterfalls are at their fullest. Also, if you time your visit right, you could catch a moonbow – a rainbow at night!

Best months: April – May for waterfalls. For moonbows, check the schedule.

A small black and white dog stands inside the hollow trunk of a tall redwood tree in a lush forest with sunlight filtering through the trees.

Redwoods

The Redwoods are a whole mood in the spring: foggy, quiet, and super lush. Hiking through giant trees in all that greenery feels almost surreal.

Best months: April – May

Best for Early Beach Weather

Key West

By spring, the winter crowds in Key West have mostly cleared, and the weather is still mild enough to enjoy before summer temperatures (and hurricanes). You may get some overlap with spring breakers if you go in March, so just be mindful of that if that’s not your jam.

Best months: April – May

A flock of birds gathers on a sandy beach near the shoreline, with waves crashing onto the rocks and the blue ocean extending to the horizon under a clear sky. Dry, brown vegetation is visible in the foreground.

San Diego

If you’re looking for mild beach weather without the summer crowds, San Diego is a great choice. Temperatures usually stay in the 60s and 70s, which makes it perfect for exploring the coastline or walking around La Jolla Cove.

Spring is also when wildflowers sometimes bloom along the coastal bluffs, adding even more color to the scenery.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

It may still be a bit cool for swimming in Gulf Shores, but it’s still lovely weather to be on the beach before all the summer crowds arrive. It’s somewhat popular with spring breakers, especially families taking spring break, but overall it’s less rowdy than Florida beach destinations.

If you’re looking for live music, be sure to check out the Flora-Bama nearby.

Best months: April – May

Best Spring City Getaways

Some cities are at their best in spring. Here are my favorites:

A woman in a blue dress walks across a wet street in front of a historic brick building with ornate ironwork balconies and hanging plants in New Orleans.

New Orleans

New Orleans is THE place to be in the spring. Just because Mardi Gras is over doesn’t mean the party stops: festival season begins in spring! Jazz Fest and French Quarter Fest are two of the most popular spring festivals.

Of course, spring is also New Orleans’ busiest season, so if you’re looking for a chill escape, you won’t find it here.

Best months: March – May

A woman wearing sunglasses and a blue scrunchie smiles in front of the Hollywood sign on a sunny day, with trees and shrubs around her and hills in the background.

Los Angeles

April showers? Not so much in L.A. It’s almost always sunny, but spring brings cooler temps than the summer, so you get sunny weather with mild temperatures. I was also pleasantly surprised by how green L.A. could be. There’s lots of good hiking to be had in Griffith Park, Topanga Canyon, and Fryman Canyon.

Austin

Austin is another popular spot to visit before summer temperatures make it unbearably hot. The city’s outdoor spaces, such asLady Bird Lake and Zilker Park, are especially enjoyable this time of year. Spring is also when the popular South by Southwest festival takes place.

Looking for some weird, very “Austin” things do to? Check out two of my favorites: Chicken Shit Bingo and Cathedral of Junk.
